EAR TRAINING BOOT CAMPS
ABOUT
The traditional methods and secrets of the Paris Conservatories have long proven themselves as enablers and guarantors of musical success. However, in today’s tech-driven world, we can sometimes inadvertently divorce tradition and elbow grease from our desire for efficiency and effectiveness. Out of these conservatory traditions, Choral Chameleon has forged a simple and effective way of meeting musicians of all levels where they are and harnessing musical intuition and skills they already possess.
In this intensive boot camp style workshop, highly experienced teachers of these methods will lead you through adaptive practice routines you can continue on your own long after these first weeks. These will help you to change the way you listen, the way you process musical information, the way you read music - even out of key context, and the way you perceive your musical self in just a short amount of time. Heavy concentration on rhythm and singing, in tandem with listening analysis, greatly bolsters personal musicianship skills, while increasing enjoyment of music-making alone or with others, and making the practice of these skills fun and more efficient. Most students have experienced a profound change within themselves in just one session.

WHAT's MY TRAINING LEVEL?
BEGINNER
This course is geared toward those with little or no prior experience in reading music. It will cover the basics of rhythm, pitch, harmony, and the process of synthesis: translating information you see into audiation, and then into performance. Focus will be on simple meter rhythms, melodies with stepwise motion and some leaps in treble clef and bass clef, and oral dictation with rhythm and pitch identifications.
INTERMEDIATE
If you already know the basics of rhythm and pitch, this course will take it to the next step. It will cover more complex rhythms and melodies including compound meter and more leaps and rudimentary chromaticism. Your personal sense of audiation and synthesis will tighten up and become a faster, more intuitive process.
ADVANCED
The volume is turned up in this course, which covers complex rhythmic constructions including shifts between simple and compound meter with either beat or division constant, melodies outside of diatonic tonality, and multi-voice written dictations. Emphasis will be placed on musical multi-tasking: processing 2 or more musical lines at the same time in listening and performance settings, as well as building strong tonal and rhythmic independence.
EXTREME
Approach if you dare! All music will be post-tonal. Challenges will be taken from Michael Friedmann’s ‘Ear Training for 20th Century Music’, Paul Hindemith and the latter portion of ‘Modus Novus’. Rhythm Training will focus on complex poly-rhythms, writing rhythmic composites for extremely challenging repertoire excerpts, and tempo modulation. Score examination of Stravinsky’s serialist choral work ‘The Dove Descending’.

TESTIMONIALS
“This course helped change my relationship with sight-singing so that it feels more natural and is easier to apply to real-life situations. It is structured to accommodate the varied difficulties and strengths of its students.”
“Even a person who makes the conscious effort to never practice outside of the class has no choice but to be musically enlightened beyond his or her current limit. The class is never boring nor is there a lack of relevant material. The teacher takes the time to learn about individuals' skill levels and assigns them material based on what he thinks they can do, and also what he knows they are able to do. Never impatient or frustrated, Peterson could probably hone the most tone deaf oaf of a caveman into some sort of logical musician."
“Vince takes each individual to their threshold and then helps to push through it. Studying music is a series of hurdles that one needs to overcome, but with the help of Mr Peterson, and of course your own will to be a better musician, the hurdles wont seem as high and impossible to jump. Not only is he an amazing musician, but my favorite trait in Prof. Peterson is his ability to understand the individual. With that understanding, he is able to give you the most detailed advice to help get you through even the toughest musical challenges.”
“Before I took this class, my reading skills were sufficient enough to get by in treble and bass clef. Now, after just a few days of intensive work, I'm able to handle alto, tenor, soprano, mezzo, and baritone. I'm now able to sit at a piano and render an excerpt from an orchestral score. The learning environment was incredibly supportive; everyone was comfortable making mistakes in front of one another and moving forward together as a group. The class shifted so much in the way I listen to and perform music.”
“Peterson’s approach to musicianship training is not just a hands-on practice, but a whole educational doctrine focusing on teaching the student how to think effectively as an independent musician...with a spirit of positive encouragement and personal attention that addresses each individual need, this unique approach made any hard work or task during the class seem effortless.”
